We’re proud to be a 2011 sponsor of the Disposable Film Festival not JUST because they do amazing things like have “bike-in” movie screenings (see below the jump) but because they support all of us getting out there and making film. For the director in all of us, start shooting on your Flip, phone, or point+shoot and see how inspired you become.

In their own words, “Selected by MovieMaker Magazine as one America’s “coolest film festivals,” the Disposable Film Festival was created in 2007 by Eric Slatkin and Carlton Evans to celebrate the creative potential of disposable video: short films made on everyday equipment like cell phones, pocket cameras, and other inexpensive video capture devices.”

Check out the festival trailer to get a taste for what it’s all about.

Team Rickshaw will be attending their premier event this Thursday March 22nd at the HIstoric Castro Theater where we will be debuting one of our coolest custom bags yet, but fear not! After debuting in SF, the festival travels around the world and may be coming soon to a city near you. And in the meantime here’s a super sneak peak of the bags.

How cool is this drive in? Anyway, one thing we’ve learned is there are amazing, fun, simple, stupid and inspiring moments everyday that are easy on film. At Rickshaw we try to capture factory life and share it with you as often as possible, who knows maybe next year we’ll even have an entry. What are you waiting for? Go out, point, and shoot!

With three days under his belt here’s the final two days of his challenging ride:

February 26th

8:30AM It is on! Headed down a steep grade (see photo below)

8:56AM Made it down the hill safely. Kept it under 35mph. Kept thinking what would happen if I got a flat at that speed.Putting on sunscreen now. Is it snowing in SF yet?

11:10AM Greetings from Santa Barbara. Mile 55. Clear skies all the way. Very cold here. Stopping for lunch before the next 50-mile stretch.

11:31AM Hot pastrami sandwich at Norton’s. Delicious before the final stretch.

1:36AM Mile 83. Ventura. Almost done!

6:54PM Day 4 is done. Greetings from Venice Beach. Just enjoyed an amazing sunset. Epic ride today — 146 miles! 9 hours 14 minutes ride time. Easy victory ride tomorrow.

Here are the in the moment updates from the past three days:

February 23rd:

5:45am We started by meeting at the iconic San Francisco Ferry Building and rode together as a team to the middle of the Golden Gate for an iconic send off on Mark’s new trusty Steed (check out the build out here).

6:40am Arrived at the Golden Gate Bridge. Just in time for sunrise.

2:31pm Mile 100. Completed, many more to go.

4:57pm I Made it! Completion of first day’s ride 129 miles, 8hrs 30min ride time, 15.1 mph average speed, Just 390 more miles!

6:38pm The new bike is great! I was a little nervous about making this the maiden voyage, but, so far so good. My new bike is a great ride. The gears are shifting perfectly. Everything is silky smooth and quiet. It feels nice and stable. The fit is just right. And it looks great. I love the bright red paint, and those fenders really are the finishing touch! It’s especially gratifying having done most of the assembly myself. Next, I’m going to learn how to build a frame!

February 24th:

7:22am On the road again. Day 2. Carmel and Big Sur this morning. 130 miles to Morro Bay.

8:37am Gorgeous day along Carmel coast

11:07am I’ve reached Bixby Bridge (See video below)

11:32am I’ve reached Big Sur Mile 35 Still have a long road ahead Little to no cell service next 50-70 miles Ciao!

3:26pm Ragged Point (and so am I) It’s been a tough slog. 50 miles of uphill climbs and downhill runs — but the climbs just get harder as the day wears on. Average speed so far, just 13.2 mph. I’m at Ragged Point, mile 81 so far today. 40 more to go. Another 3 hours of riding. Ugh. Can’t wait for a hot shower and a cold beer!

6:32pm Day 2 is in the bag! Made it to Morro Bay at 6:15. 125 miles today. I’m half-way to LA, and I’m exhausted!

February 25th:

8:26am Good morning! Hit the road a little before 7:00. Light rain and a little wind. Chilly. Having a coffee at Peet’s in San Luis Obispo. Mile 17. It’s gonna be a long day…

9:39am Damn. First flat. Mile 26.6. Rear, of course! Photo op indeed… (See photo above)

10:22am Flat fixed. Back on the road again.

1:48pm Well, this is fun! Made it to Guadalupe at 12:30. Mile 52. Ride time 4 hrs. The last hour was brutal. Strong headwinds in the Santa Maria Valley slowed me to 7-8-9 miles per hour on a long flat stretch where I would otherwise cruise along at 20-25 mph. The shoulder is narrow and muddy from the tractors tending the fields — and the mud is 6-inches deep to the right. Feels like I’m pedaling through puddles of molasses. Half the speed, twice the time, twice the work. It started pouring rain during the last half hour. I stopped at a Mexican restaurant for lunch. I’m looking out the window at the rain coming down at a 45-degree angle — which will be head-on when I’m back on the bike. I’m shivering cold, but I’ll warm-up after a few miles.Next stop, Lompoc. About 30 miles and two good climbs. We’ll see if I still have time (and energy) to go another 50 miles from there to Santa Barbara. Adios!

5:19pm I’m done for the day! Made it to Lompoc at 4:50. I’m soaked and chilled to the bone marrow. No way I’m riding another 50 miles to Santa Barbara tonight. Time to warm up and dry off.

Morro Bay to Lompoc
79 miles
6:23 ride time
12.2 average speed
Wind, rain, cold, mud
333 miles total so far

Beer time!

Our CEO Mark has made a habit of cycling to LA the past few years. He first rode to TED Long Beach in 2009, and last year he campaigned to raise money for At The Crossroads by riding to LA once again. This year Mark continues his tradition of a 400+ mile costal ride to TED…..but this time with a new bike!

Mark spent the past few months amassing just the right parts and designing a custom frame to build a bike from scratch for his latest journey. “Really Mark is building his own bike,” you ask? Yes, really! And here is part one in our video series. Enjoy!

With Lunar New year giving our office and factory a three day weekend, I hopped a plane to Portland to see my sister and her family. I took my very own new custom Medium Zero (Secret Garden Tweed / Florescent Green inside / Moss Binding and buckles) with me that compliments my sister’s new Medium Zero Messenger Bag (Earl Grey Tweed with Blue Skies inside and steel binding) plus two Kiss Me Kits for the kids. I quickly made my way through security in Oakland and landed safely in beautiful, overcast Portland.

Besides visiting my sister and her family, my goal was to visit our newest retailer: Missing Link Toys on N. Mississippi Street. Can I just say, that all of the neighborhoods in Portland have distinct personalities, just like here in San Francisco, but N. Mississippi Street was my favorite. Just a quick drive and a short walk we easily found Missing Link Toys and popped in. Our bags were beautifully displayed in the window and along three shelves on the side of the shop. We were greeted by a sweet old dog, who allowed my young niece and nephew to pet and play with him. Susan, the shop owner was so nice and friendly, and was so enthusiastic to have our bags in the store. She showed such passion for her business of selling toys, games, bags and much more. She was incredibly knowledgeable about where all the items come from, whether it’s a bag maker in SF, or a screen printer from Portland.

You can tell right away that she cares deeply about small businesses, local goods and her community. I bought myself a Missing Link T shirt, and a second shirt from a small company called Squidfire who screen print in Baltimore. I also picked up a PVC-free Neanderthal Eraser made by Kikkerland designs, for my boyfriends office. Overall I loved the creativity and variety of items at Missing Link Toys. After saying our goodbyes, we explored the rest of the street and walked away with many more gifts. I absolutely recommend visiting this neighborhood next time you find yourself in Portland. Of course if you live in Portland, please stop by and say hi to the friendly folks at Missing Link, and tell your friends that they can buy their own Rickshaw Bag there!

As for the Kiss Me Kits, my niece was excited to make Valentines for her mom and dad, so we spent the afternoon sticking hearts and learning to spell Valentines. The chocolate went over very well with mom and dad (and visiting auntie), as did the mints for clearing up stuffy noses.

You could say it was love at first sight when the Green Team leader took a tour of our Dogpatch factory after learning about our Round Trip Shipper, a green shipping option that’s currently in development. In researching a local, useable, sustainable gift for the Green Team Leader’s Summit, an annual gathering of Team Leaders from around the world, Rickshaw came to mind.

The goal was to design a custom gift for the Green Team leaders as well as something that will surely be a much sought after item in giveaways at Green Team events and online. The final designs turned out beautifully.

The Green Team works on projects to make eBay’s operations more environmentally friendly, including reducing energy and water consumption; encouraging lower impact commuting; reducing the use of consumable/disposable products; bringing more sustainable food into its cafes; and getting involved with local communities. It was started by 40 employees, and today, more than 2,300 employees and 300,000 eBay users around the world are eBay Green Team members – promoting green business practices within eBay, volunteering in communities, and supporting environmental legislation.

At eBay, small actions can make a big difference in the world. And that’s what the eBay Green Team is all about: encouraging and empowering individuals to buy, sell and think green every day. We have a similar vision at Rickshaw. We call it Change for Good. Small steps to encourage positive change in your life and the world. This is a part of my personal vision and my New Year’s resolution. Ultimately, I’d like to know where and how everything I have purchased is created. Along with that, I’d like to support only local businesses.

I’m thrilled that Rickshaw and I are able to be a part of eBay’s sustainability initiatives. Its refereshing to know that a large company like eBay has committed to change for good.

We were ecstatic when Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous opened their doors less than a year ago. As you can imagine we love the Dogpatch but we love it a little more with ice cream in arms reach of our Rickshaw factory! With old-fashioned style and delicious nouveau flavors, our friends Ian and Anabelle have made quite a splash.

Each batch is hand spun from organic ingredients, and when it’s gone that’s it. So if it jumps out at you, take a pint home. Our personal favorites are “real” mint cookie, bananas foster, chicory coffee and of course ballpark (Anchor Steam beer flavored ice cream with salted peanuts, chocolate and pretzels.) Homemade toppings like Recchiuti fudge, caramel, house made whipped cream and fresh toasted almonds complete an amazing sundae.

Outside of the deliciousness we’re pleased to see our local community grow. On a sunny day we see more and more smiling faces walking by with a hand rolled cone and we’re so excited for all the development happenings in the Dogpatch as we speak. We’ve been lucky to make great friends along the way, and we love supporting small businesses especially these guys who rock our world on a weekly basis.

I think I see an ice cream bag in our near future! Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous 699 22nd St. (at Third St.); open daily, 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m.

I always say “Sustainability comes from within.” Ok, so I don’t always say that but I usually believe it. Tonight I was on a run in Civic Center Plaza and noticed some new tall wind turbines had gone up nestled behind the rows of electric cars and fancy new bike racks. Apparently these are part of an “off the grid” pilot program for completely solar-powered street lights.

Earlier in 2010 Civic Center Plaza was ordained with the honorary title “SF Green Resource District” and maybe that title isn’t just for show. I’m not familiar with too many details about this solar pilot program but from a pedestrian’s perspective I can say the the super bright lights did an amazing job lighting the 1965 statue Three Heads Six Arms on loan from the Palace Gallery in New York.

Three Heads Six Arms -Zhang Huan b.1965

It would seem however, not all are fans, as during my jog I heard two passers by grumble, “This monstrosity is messing up the lighting. Why do they have to mess with my plaza.” However I might argue the extra light is great for dog owners who take late night walks and might need help spotting their four-legged companion’s little “treasures.”

Solar Powered Shadow

Working for a brand focused on sustainability we’re always asking ourselves how we can do things better. Is a solar powered Rickshaw in our future? Maybe, but for now I’m excited to see what comes of this pilot program in what may become America’s greenest city. Thumbs up to green initiatives these solar lights are as bright as the morning sun as seen by my solar-powered shadow.
